One of the most memorable lines in the modern hiphop moment (1993 to 1997) is in Jeru the Damaja’s “Come Clean.” He raps: “Have you forgotten, I’ll tap your jaw. / I also kick like kung fu flicks by Run Run Shaw.” Many headz were blown by the mention of that giant of postwar Hong Kong action cinema. Run Run Shaw, also known as the Czar of Asian Movies, was the cofounder of Shaw Brothers Studios, a company that produced more than a thousand films from the late 1950s to the1980s. Some of these films are classics, like the graphic Golden Swallow and Come Drink with Me—two masterpieces that are shown as part of Northwest Film Forum’s superb Shaw Brothers series. Horses run, hands get chopped, swords fly. It’s gory. It’s beautiful.
