In this yearly show, Stonington Gallery will be celebrating masks as both an art form and an existing cultural expression. Historically along the Northwest Coast, masks were tools of transformation, of “becoming” that helped tell stories and explain histories. The Art of Becoming features masks that riff on  their use in ceremonial practice and aesthetic expression from artists who live in and are from the Northwest Coast. These masks, these tools, will be made of diverse materials like wood, glass, stone, bronze, fiber, metal, and horsehair.
