Paal Nilssen-Love: Large Unit
Recommended
Don't Miss
Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love can be viewed as the Tony Williams of Scandinavian avant-garde jazz. Over the last quarter century, the 44-year-old percussion dynamo has proved himself adept at various permutations of jazz and rock with an array of esteemed collaborators, including Peter Brötzmann, Jim O’Rourke, the Thing, and Arto Lindsay. The 14-member Large Unit present many complex moving parts in pieces that can change from five-alarm blow-outs to airy meditativeness with the hiss of a hi-hat. Immersion in the Large Unit’s repertoire should disabuse any notions that Scandos lack passion.
