Gary Clark Jr. is a badass motherfucker. Seriously. The Austin-brewed blues, R&B, and soul artist can wail on guitar like nobody’s business—his chops are serious, while his style of showmanship is a steady, laid-back burn. His 2019 album, This Land, is a righteous battle cry against the America we are now living in, where white nationalists are out and proud, like it ain’t no thang, and claiming entitled ownership of our country. What the fuck era are we living in again? I think Gary Clark Jr. has been wondering this, too, because the ripping title track, which kicks off the album, is just what you need to be reminded that this land belongs to us all. Its chorus was written before Trump came after “the squad,” but it feels completely relevant to that whole sitch: “Go back where you come from. / We don't want your kind. / We think you's a dog born. / Fuck you, I'm America's son. / This is where I come from. / This land is mine.” Fuck. Yeah.
