"Flutist Paul Taub presents Landscape With Birds, a recital of mostly 20th century music from three continents. Including works with bass flute, alto flute, and piccolo, the repertoire covers a gamut of styles, techniques, and influences.

From Europe, Taub will play two pieces by the great Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks, whose transcendent music Taub has been championing since the late 1980s. Georg Phillip Telemann’s set of Fantasias will be represented as the historical 'spice' in the program. From Asia, Itinerant by the great Japanese 20th century composer Toru Takemitsu will be balanced by Chinese/American composer Bun-Ching Lam’s Bittersweet Music III for solo bass flute, a piece that Taub commissioned.

North America will be represented by Canadian flutist/composer (and Taub’s mentor) Robert Aitken’s Plainsong, with its influence of medieval chant contrasting with the lighthearted Icicle, both for C-flute, and Whidbey Island composer Janice Giteck’s Agrarian Chants, featuring all four of Taub’s instruments in one work.

Taub, recently retired from 39 years of teaching at Cornish College of the Arts, is perhaps best-known in Seattle as the flutist of the Seattle Chamber Players." (Promo Copy)
