Depressed Cake Shop
In 2013, United Kingdom–based creative director and PR specialist Emma Thomas dreamed up a bake sale to promote mental-health awareness and raise money for local mental-health charities. The concept was simple: The cakes sold were a gloomy gray, but they contained a cheerful pop of color within to symbolize hope in the face of depression. It caught on, and cities everywhere, from Glasgow to Houston to Kuala Lumpur, began organizing their own versions. As they do each October, NAMI Seattle will host the Seattle fundraiser at Optimism Brewing, with somber-looking confections contributed by Le Fournil, Fran’s Chocolates, Top Pot Doughnuts, Chocolati, Borracchini’s, and others.
