In Waldman's novel, an Afghan American student travels to Afghanistan to work with an inspiring Western humanitarian and writer—only to find that the man's depictions of his charitable projects are full of inaccuracies, and the villagers he's helping aren't altogether pleased by his presence. Bring in an ambush and the US military, and the student is forced to choose between the villagers and the American soldiers.
