In parts of pre-Civil War New Orleans and Charleston, a subset of openly mixed-race urbanites enjoyed some rights of citizenship and the privileges of wealth and social status that other people of color were denied. In this talk, journalist and author Daniel Brook will share insights from this crucial time in American history as outlined in his latest book, The Accident of Color.
