Go wild like it's recruitment week at the Computer Science school Amazon bought you from.

SO EDGE! SUCH SNARK! MUCH WOW!
2
There are so many more clever ways to take the piss out of newcomers, Callan. I'm not saying you have to take the high road even, just be smarter and funnier about it.
3
Bainbridge's Most Dangerous strikes again! Watch out for the 5-year local, he's ready to take it to these slightly-more-recent imports!
4
I thought they were funny, and I'm an "old" transplant (16+ years). Still using an umbrella like a big jerk who doesn't know any better. (They're awesome as blockers when jackoff drivers peel over puddles and try to drench us poor sods waiting at the bus stop.)
5
I truly appreciate that disdain for umbrellas in Seattle continues. It's idiosyncratic and wonderful.
6
you're capable of better. one of your poorer efforts.
7
Bravo for your biting satire, Callan.
@5 Dougsf: I agree.
Big *sigh* though about all the newcomers---especially how Jeff Bezos scored so much Amazon $$$$$$$$ out of Seattle to outwealth Bill Gates' Microsoft status.

Be careful Callan. I was once your age trying to become a Seattle born writer/artist. The Times agreed to hire me as a temp but soon I was an IT guy and then a big tech temp job lured me to Asia and somehow I became one of "them". (This was the 90s - it was even a bigger betrayal to the tribe back then.)

Yeah, wtf with the umbrella hate?! I like to keep my hair dry for client meetings!
11
"Deconstructed coffee!" Good one.
12
I agree with almost everything but, was this supposed to be funny? because it read like it was supposed to be.

I've never understood the alleged PNW disdain for umbrellas either. They're hands down the most convenient option for staying reasonably dry if it's pouring outside and you only need to walk a few blocks and don't want to get all gussied up in rain gear. But I suspect umbrella-hate is mainly a media creation -- I've never been criticized for using one, at least not to my face.

I am from Seattle, grew up in Seattle, and lived most of my life in Seattle. I assure you the anti-umbrella shit is new (ish?), and seems to be promoted mostly by people who moved to Seattle a few years ago to try to differentiate/chasten those who have moved to Seattle more recently. But I think Callan is making fun of that, and rightfully so.

I agree with the umbrella thing, it may have been born out of dueling Seattle images of Grunge Rock and bumbershoots ~30 years ago. Plus if you can't handle an umbrella in a Seattle crowd, you really shouldn't travel to a place like Tokyo.

Note: If you do travel to Tokyo there are stands full of free umbrellas outside most stores. ;)

Yikes, this is tiresome stuff.

Callan, I love your comics, I look forward to reading them every week.

I'm a Seattle native and finally accepted a software job from Amazon after they offered to drive a dumptruck full of money into my driveway. Yes I know, I'm a sellout. All of my coworkers are from out of town, 90% are from out of the country. Maybe on my entire floor there is one person who I could *maybe* pigeonhole as being a "tech bro". The other 95% are intelligent, polite, walk to work, etc

Please wait...
