Domesticating a wild animal is not a good thing to do. This squirrel could easily lose it's fear of humans and go up to anyone which could lead to bad results; recall Chas Mudedes recent report about a neighborhood cat. Squirrels can also carrie rabies. As to the conflict of your cat with the squirrel it would probably have been best to just leave them alone and let nature take its course. If, for example, you interfered with your cat mauling a bird the cat would back off, for good, on this particular bird. The bird could be half dead and unable to fly but your cat would leave it be. Even if you were to try and offer the bird to your cat at this point, he would reject it. The bird basically be left to fend for itself in its incapacitated state and die a slow death. Over all it is best to leave wild animals alone.

I highly doubt it was your intention, but allowing the cat to continue to torture the infant squirrel has gotta be the least Humane thing a human being might due.
On the other hand, there is definitely a risk of disease to your animals and yourself, when 'adopting' an animal from the great out-of-doors.
And on the other, other hand, I've always thought it'd be pretty cool to have a Raven (Julio) on my shoulder. Always have somebuddy around, in emergencies, to have a intelligent conversation with. I'd get him a flea/lice collar (and a earplug for me) (they're fucking LOUD) and take him to bars and he could outsmart the loco riff-raff for drinks or money. Or both.

Great story, Rebecca.
