Thank GOD we don't have gun control. Can you imagine how much more gun violence there would be if we did?!?
2
Third Rail, you're absolutely correct! We should have more laws, like they do in Oakland, DC, Detroit, Chicago and New York. They have absolutely no gun crime there since they've got strict gun control laws.

/Sarcasm.

I, for one, prefer Seattle because it is a metropolis that allows for lawful concealed carry of firearms by responsible citizens. Not many of those left.

I fail to see how SPD can have "record numbers" of patrolling officers when there are exactly zero officers currently training in academy at the same time the police force is understaffed by at least 30 officers. As with the mid-town violence earlier this week (I'm fully in Eli's camp on this one --- dissembling over semantics is less than helpful here, Brendan), one integral variable has been left out of the reportage: The fiscal condition of our force and the practical results of it being as underfunded as the rest of our infrastructure. Anyway, I work down here every day, and the tension is thick enough to slice. Let's hope we pull it together.

@2:

DC's gun control laws were struck down by a rightwardly-activist court.

New York has almost no gun crime anymore.
5
@3:

Because SPD is lying, they do not have extra patrols on the street. Maybe 1 or 2 on weekends. There are maybe 20 officers every night patrolling everything from SODO to the ship canal and west of I-5. That includes all of Belltown, Queen Anne, Magnolia, Pioneer Square, Chinatown-International District and parts of eastlake (look up a map of the West Precinct). 20 officers to cover that area on a Friday and Saturday night - ridiculous understaffing.
6
@4: NYPD have been under-reporting crime stats for a couple of years - advising victims to change their stories, and in one case, throwing a whistle blower in a mental ward.

This is yet another example of how the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) psychological tone of a city or region leads to a downward spiral of crime and unacceptable behaviors that soon affect innocent people in an increasingly scary fashion. Seattle prides itself on accepting just about anything, but honestly -- how's that working for ya? The mindset of Seattle vacillates between passivity, passive-aggression, and outrage -- usually over the wrong things, and in a vain attempt to achieve some sort of moral high ground that is more fashionable than practical. I've joked with others who tend to see the big picture with less naïveté and most agree: the "come as you are" attitude, with value judgements of any kind being discouraged (unless directed towards those with thoughts that are politically right-of-center, even centrist) has not served Seattle well ... and now we'll all have to live with the consequences.

And NO, I'm not a Tea Party right-winger ... I'm a rock n' roller, but an older and much wiser one. I've watched friends die of alcoholism and drug abuse, so I've seen firsthand how a naive and "anything's OK" mindset leads to tragedies. Sometimes it seems Seattle's problems stem from a pervasive and quite simple gutlessness -- just look at our weenie mayor! Was there even a hint of being pissed off when the May Day rocks came through the windows of his own home? No, in his usual meek/passive voice he made a joke about it. It used to make me angry when The Stranger's "Last Days" column highlighted some disgusting behavior on a Metro bus, and it was played off as a joke ... apparently about urban living. But now (more recently) increasing violence and attacks, both on the buses and at bus stops, have become more frequent -- it's not just some homeless and mentally-ill person picking off scabs and flinging them, or urinating. Seriously, is THIS the environment in which you aspire to live?

And I don't buy that the huge increase of property crime and vehicle prowls is the result of a down economy. The criminals will always do whatever they can get away with, and we currently have a feckless police force (who now have the DOJ wagging their finger at them if the SPD so much as farts in the direction of a not-yet-clearly-guilty perp ... more so if the possible perp now happens to be a member of any group that currently has a great deal of political capital in an increasingly PC world.) What will eventually happen is a political backlash because people don't want to be scared and live in a shithole. Frankly, I don't want to live in a more repressive and right-wing, societally stifling environment like certain cities in the Deep South ... and don't think we couldn't morph into that if the wheels continue coming off the bus. (Read history: Germany in the 20's, and into the 1930's). We have a very vested interest in growing some balls and stop being so passive and gutless. It's not cute, it's not truly progressive, and it's highly dangerous.

And sorry, Washington Ceasefire -- your dreams of gun control aren't the solution, either ... although your college-era-like idealism must seem charming to many, but not to me. I now carry a concealed pistol (legally) and have been well-trained. I cannot fully put into words how much more peace of mind it gives me. I have already fended-off one mugging/attack (I didn't have to fire, or even draw and show my weapon ... just draw back my coat slightly to demonstrate that I was willing to protect myself). All I had to do was NOT be as gutless as many in this city and that, for me, is a first step in being safe and secure and not living in a worried, cowed manner.

Honestly, Seattle ... it's time to grow a pair! It's time to be firm and proactive about the things that REALLY matter. The only people that benefit from the current state of affairs are the candle-makers who sell to the folks holding vigils; and that's just as far as it goes: "Oh, woe is me! Boo hoo!" -- few arrests, little done, more hand-wringing and then back to the usual hipster (child-like, passive, maddening!) way of looking at the world through deeply rose-colored glasses. Just remember, the psychological tone of a city or region DOES matter and has long-term consequences. And you reap what you sow!

The crime situation downtown is appalling. When will Seattle institute the insanely simple "broken window" policy?
9
@4 - really? No gun crime in New York? I was there for two weeks last September and on one weekend alone there were 47 shootings. Here's a more recent happening that you can see for yourself

I am so mad at the Mayor McGinn. Mr. McGinn statement," A number of these incidents were drug rip-offs, where the people knew each other, were meeting," McGinn said. "The other type we see is people taking offense, feeling disrespected out at night, and that leads to violence."
"Nicole Westbrook's case doesn't fit that," he added.

Is he telling me that my great nephew "disrespeected or a gang bang took offense" and that gives them the right to shoot Desmond down in coldblood. I still blame the City of Seattle for not taking murders off the street and allowing them to be free just because they murdered a young Africa American man.
Desmond Jackson was not in a gang and he was not into drugs. So why is his being murdered different than Nicole. The Mayor is the one that support the clubs in SODO being open and do not protect the young people going to the club to only have fun.
The Mayor want people to feel safe by saying the other victims had something to do with their murder. The kids that killed Desmond are still out there driving there car and they are dangerous, young, wild, and free with their guns.

How about some actual links, "ActualFactsPlease"?

New York experienced only 9.4 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2011.

So unless all of those 47 shooters on your vacation were terrible shots, you're just making shit up.

I figured out what you were trying to link to, BTW -- a video of cops successfully taking out a solitary thug (whose gun presumably crossed state lines illegally from a "legal" vendor in one of your vaunted no-gun-control states).

One random video of a police action does not a trend (or a point) make.

Anyway, here's what gun crime looks like nationally: http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/…

Let's face it, McGinn doesn't care about public safety. He never did, and never will. He and his friends think crime is cool. Makes for a more "vibrant" city.

The drastic increase in crime in Trenton NJ following sweeping budget cuts that eliminated 1/3 of the police force shows there is an indisputable link between budget allocations for crime fighting and crime stats. Duh. Seattle had a $67 million General Fund revenue shortfall in 2011. Until we start generating tax revenue to pay for services crime will only get worse. Here's some Trenton Stats. Hopefully, Seattle can avoid this kind of calamity.

Trenton, NJ

From Jan '11 to Jan 2012
gun assaults: 76% increase
robberies with a firearm: up 55%
car thefts: up more than 100%
break-ins: up more than 200%
Treton's police department no longer has the staffing to investigate ANY theft.

See link for great radio program on gutting of the commons.

"They aren't doing anything for us," Williams said. "I've told the mayor's office and the Seattle Police Department: I blame them for this murder. I did not watch the news before, but I do now..." Williams said the police and mayor should have responded with more alarm and publicity.

Be advised: If you don't "watch" the news, you are unlikely to be aware of the associated "publicity". Besides "watching", there are other means of media available to enable your awareness of Seattle's homicidal goings-on, in addition to current events beyond those related to your family or friends.

@ 7. . . wouldn't a bunch of people shooting eachother be an example of "growing a pair?" If your argument involves more than one use of "balls," it sounds more like an emotional reaction than any sort of plan.

and people drink themselves to death everywhere. I don't think that's a function of Seattle's perceived permissiveness-- though the weather might have something to do with it.

Does anyone have a site with more information and the locations about all of the 13 murders that took place this year and their current investigations?

There have been many tragedies as of late. I have spent much time thinking about the victims and their families. It is heartbreaking, but rest assured, society is not crumbling. We are still at historic lows for violence, across the entire globe, there is less violence than ever before during humankind having tenure on this planet.

It is only an anomaly, and does not represent a long-term trend. I realize that is no comfort to those that have lost a loved one. But consider for a moment, that news simply travels faster and farther than ever before, and that causes a shift in our perception, and therefore, we see more violence, when the fact is that less violence is occurring. Trends like this one come and go, and it will go away soon, I assure you. Hold fast, we need not rush to produce new laws and such, as our existing laws are more than adequate, and our police force is among the best at apprehending criminals. They will catch these heartless bastards that did this. It is extremely difficult to get away with murder. Compared to 30 years ago, it seems almost impossible. The numbers speak for themselves. They apprehend the vast majority of violent criminals.

We need not worry too much, as this problem will recede and we will continue our downward trend of violent crimes. There is nothing that one can do to combat an anomaly. IT will go away on its own. Don't panic. Just help anyone in trouble, should you ever have the unfortunate privilege to witness violence, it is a blessing, as you can stop the violence. I would put my life on the line to protect any of you from being harmed, and we should all do the same. It is terrifying, but necessary. In the words of Genki Sudo - "We are all one".
18
Why is everyone angry at the Mayor and the SPD? They're not responsible for killing people (with notable exceptions). One the murderers of people are responsible for the murder. Why blame anyone else? Blame need only be allotted to the perpetrator of the crime.
19
How about security cameras?
20
I lived in Seattle when there were 80-100 murders per year. There were 39 in 2010 and 2011 COMBINED.

I ain't sounding the alarm bell just yet.
21
@scratchmaster joe, if the City of Seattle over work their police department and det, then they are too blame for people being murdered. These offices cannot do their jobs if they have too many cases. The Mayor job is to make sure people of Seattle are protected and to get people off the street if they are cause bodly harm to another. The major and the head of the police department are not doing their job by not have enough policeofficer on the street or Det to their job.
@fetish, so you are like me sitting back,relaxing planning your next trip to God knows where, until someone you love and care very deeply for is murdered. Fetish, sound the alarm bell now so no one you know have to be a victim and if they are a victim there will be justice for them and you.

@11

9.4 per 100,000 would be 56.4 homiciders per year for a city the size of Seattle. Your statistics show that NYC has more than double the rate of gun crime compared to Seattle, despite NYC having some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation.

Also Guardian UK, that really doesn't count as a valid source. The Brits like to pump up the United States gun crime to cover for the fact that despite draconian gun laws they have the highest rate of violent crime in Europe and a higher rate of crime than even south Africa, they are now considering banning knives. I am glad we kicked their monarchist asses back to their side of the pond.

But as long as you are into UK news

@20
see:

I pray for the people responsible for these killlings. My prayer is that you burn in HELL forever! Hope you get what's coming to you sooner than later...
