Pardon my ignorance, but who the fuck is Tim Gunn and why should I care what he says?
2
We need the wisdom and perspective of Michael K's observations on this over at dlisted:
Tim Gunn's tongue is like a dream sewing machine with a needle that never breaks and constantly stitches threads of cuntiness into almost every word that comes out of his tongue and that's why I want to curl at his feet and let those cuntified gems drop into my ear hole.

Well, there is that Expedia ad as well.
4
Oh...it's funny. Everybody is so goddamn sensitive.
Hilary Clinton should laugh at it then take it seriously and hire him to give her a makeover.
5
@1. Your question is incomplete, it should read "...who the fuck is Tim Gunn and why should I care what he says; and what the fuck is a "Lopez Show?" Is it similar to a "Dirty Sanchez?"
6
uh, he's right...The Clintonistas need to calm the fuck down.
7
Tim Gunn, meanwhile, loves Nancy Pelosi, in which case obviously Hillary needs to turn herself into this.
8
Nancy Pelosi serves just a dash of hot grandma, and I love her for that. She has vintage Mugler suits that are AMAZING.

Hillary has always been a bit mumsy, but I think she looks OK these days. And who cares? Fashion isn't her thing.

If I may digress, those frozen Republican wives are so great. That Gingrich monsterlady, and Senator McCain's brittle wifey would have been amazing to watch in the White House, dishing up some reheated Nancy Reagan.

Anyway -- Tim's mouth get's pretty snappy. I think d-listed had it right. That's what he's there for.
9
the saga of Schmader not having a sense of humor continues
10
@5 I've actually never heard of the Lopez show either, but I am aware of what a dirty sanchez is. But seriously, if looks are what people get elected on, I'm realizing that my high school student government electorate makes more sense than how this country votes.
11
Isn't this the sort of thing he says every day?
12
What @1 said.
13
Everyone who voted yes has cankles, or dresses in unflattering pant suits. You ask a GAY FASHION CRITIQUE a question about fashion, you get an honest answer. He's obviously mortified by her wardrobe. Bleh!
14
We are missing a post from Mr. Poe on this topic.

Where are you Mr. Poe? They are attacking your man!!
15
I thought this was a non-topic until I read the comment section on jezebel and learned that all gay men are terrible misogynist that invented fashion to degrade women.
16
Um...

http://tammybruce.com/2011/07/why-hillar…

Hilly REALLY needs to start listening to Mr. Gunn.
17
Yeah, I think he has a point. Hil could do better, for herself and as our representative on the world stage. Is it a huge deal? No, but it's an amusing one, with some truth in it.

Relatedly: OMG Project Runway Season 9 premieres tonight and I don't have @%$!%^# cable right now.

Relatedly (or maybe not): OMG The Butthole Surfers are coming to Bumbershoot!!! Those @^$!@#*!s are gonna make me go to Bumberflippin'shoot for the first time in yeeeaarrrs!

Tim Gunn's expertise is fashion.

Whether you love or hate Hillary Clinton, she really isn't considered to be one of the better-dressed female pols in DC.

Granted, she's under a higher amount of scrutiny than other female politicos (anyone remember when the press had a meltdown because she wore a discreet shell top under her jacket that exposed the tiniest bit of cleavage?), and DC is hardly a fashion town. But with her money and access, she really could dress better. If only so people wil shut up about her fashion faux-pas.

As @8 noted above, Pelosi has a style and her clothes are well-fitted. So while you may not like her style, it fits into her high-profile political profile. Hillary Clinton can't say the same.

I can't get upset about this. I'm more upset that Sarah Palin set a precedent so that a woman as well-groomed and inane as Michelle Bachmann can actually raise funds for a POTUS run. Because, you know, she's pretty, and apparently that's all that now matters for a female political candidate.
19
Chasmosaur brings up a good point -- people are just as quick to dismiss Bachmann/Palin for being "just pretty" as they are to dismiss Hillary Clinton for being "not pretty enough on the world stage" or whatever.

No matter what Hillary wears or what she looks like, she will get shit for it. Why even bother playing a game she can't win? Especially when she's incredibly busy being, you know, secretary of state and all.
20
Secretary Clinton has famously said that she dresses in a "uniform" of sorts to dissuade commentary on what she's wearing.

Looks like no matter what she does, she can't catch a fucking break.

Personally I'd prefer that my political leaders concern themselves with policy over fashion.
21
@20

Fashion is a relative term in DC. It's more about looking the part. It's about the power suit. (I grew up and spent most of my life there, so I'm familiar with the concept.)

For men, that's relatively easy, and mostly they distinguish themselves through their ties. For women, it's a little more complicated. Political wives generally have to look feminine and conservative, with some sort of personal touch to distinguish them from other political wives. But female politicians aren't political wives, and most do concern themselves with policy over fashion. That doesn't mean, though, that they don't take care with their appearance. Male Congressional members and White House staff do as well - you just don't hear about it as much.

One of the absolute best examples of female DC power dressing is Madeleine Albright. Her pins were both accessories and political statements (the book she wrote on them a few years ago is well worth the read), and she famously wouldn't let those on the other side of the negotiating table forget it. She wasn't young and trim by the time she was SecState, but she was a powerful woman and she dressed the part.

The fact is, people judge you on how you look. If you are the Secretary of State for the United States of America, you better come into the room radiating power (and respect) from your fingertips. I can assure you Secretary Clinton's male counterparts are well aware of how they come across on the TV screen and in newspaper photos. It's not anti-feminist to know that dressing well is part of being powerful. (It IS misogynistic to dismiss a female candidate's eligibility and qualifications because she has cankles.)
22
@21, with all due respect, I do think it's extremely sexist to claim that a woman in a pantsuit is suffering from gender confusion.
23
@22 - That's true, if you take it at face value. (And it really did irritate the crap out of me during the 2008 election when the press were nitpicking at Hillary Clinton for her clothing choices and makeup routine, yet praising Sarah Palin for essentially being pretty by comparison. Made me want to slap the 4th Estate on the whole.)

This being Tim Gunn, I thought he was simply speaking sartorially. As in her clothing choices were gender neutral or leaning towards the traditionally masculine, not that she herself is gender confused. Then again, a) we don't see the whole context on how the discussion got started or finished and b) I'm not a Project Runway watcher, so I really don't know how misogynist Tim Gunn can be. I know the other times I've seen him, he just seems to be very sharp with a very academic and clinical view on clothing.

Is he outrageously misogynistic? I'm honestly asking, I don't know. It seems too stereotypically easy to say all gay men hate women. I'm quite sure if I Google "Is Tim Gunn misogynistic?" I'll get all sorts of results that say so. But I could also Google "Are Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum married?" and get hits on that, too. ;)
24
@22 - Oh, and I don't think he was saying all pantsuits are a mark of a woman who is gender-confused, either in her personal life or her clothing choices. He was just criticizing her clothes.

Since I'm guessing this was part of a Project Runway season launch (I don't watch the show, but it's hard to miss the PR for that right now), they were probably talking clothes. Which is what you do when you have Tim Gunn on your show pushing his show about clothes.
25
I love Tim Gunn. My brother in law (also gay, also a Tim) maintains that women who can't properly dress themselves should have a gay man at hand to fix them. While I pass the test by his measurement, every year for my birthday he presents me with a full outfit, down to the shoes. He always hits the mark, something that can't be said of his brother, to whom I have been married for 20 years.

Hillary should not be allowed out in public in many of the emsembles she puts together. Seriously, she is high profile and constantly in the public eye, someone should take her in hand. If Michele Obama and her fabulously toned arms are fair game, so are HIllary and her cankles.
26
I can't take seriously any insult that has been used by Beavis and/or Butthead.

Please wait...
