Not having any more to go on than the adulation of the author of this piece, the jazz pianist is supposedly talented, but flawed in his choice of drugs. Should we feel sorry for him or just pass him over as another"talented but flawed" artist that we have had too many of in the recent past. I play the piano, seems much better when I have had a few drinks but the enduring piano player will do as well sober as when he is "in his cups". No sorrow for the addicted musician who can't come to grips with his or her addiction. It doesn't enhance the music for the listener, only temporarily for the musician.
