I think you mean "get a look at Savage fifteen years ago, when this photo was taken"!
Congratulations, Dan. My only suggestion is that all the actors have voices that sound like Kelsey Grammer, David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves and John Mahoney from "Frasier".
@3, I thought that picture was older than that. Still, who wants to watch anything about a middle aged white guy? Sounds like the key demographic is the AARP set.
Hooray! The production companies he's got in his corner are all CAA-synergized, so maybe the stars align this time. Hire Guy Branum as a writer, maybe?
(And I, too, wish I were still the age at which Dan first published that picture.)
Groanworthily, one of those linked articles says among the few pilots picked up by ABC is "Chev & Bev, a single-camera comedy starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo as two baby boomers who are fun, relevant and living a selfish retirement when their world is turned upside down and they are suddenly left to raise their grandchildren."
It all depends on the quality of the writers. You get Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinski involved and the rest is history. Congrats Dan. Just don't stop doing your podcast. I don't want to imagine my life without my weekly fix.
@18: Better idea:
The kid who comes out as gay? There should be another kid at his school who's trans in an "in your face" kind of way: puts a lot of effort into passing, acts really girly/macho (depending whether MtF/FtM), gets belligerent with school bullies who mock her/him about it, resentful of school administration due to past argument over bathrooms/locker rooms, generally acts out. I'd say the character would work better as a FtM, based on my gut reaction. Probably raised by aging hippies. He and the central character (assuming that the kid who comes out IS INDEED the protagonist) could have that bond about the shared issues of gay and trans people.
Instead of this sitcom, how much more fun would it be to watch two drag queens host a local newscast. Can't Lori Matsukawa take a sick day. It would be awesome.
LMAO that Dan foes Rick Santorum, Tony Perkins, Bryan Fisher, Peter Labarbera sit by watching their profiles defiled, their profits plummet, and their allies heading for the hills while everything Dan touches turns solid gold.
@19- OK that's actually a better idea, but I think I'd be more entertained by a wacky trans neighbor; preferably one who insisted on being referred to as "it" and throws glitter at people whenever they use a gendered pronoun for anything that hasn't clearly expressed a preference. They'd have to be an adult because I don't think that'd be funny with a high school kid, it'd be too sad for me.
Hopefully this will be pretend circa late 70's (approximately when Dan would have come out?), and feature gloriously hideous print polyester big collared shirts, Jaymar sansabelt slacks, "leisure suits", lots of shaggy male hair/big fros, etc.
Not quite sure what the significance of 'single camera' is. Can someone enlighten me why they even bother to tell us? I just hope it isn't super quick cut as everything seems to be shot today, and/or with that annoying constantly-moving "hand held/shaky" look which would ruin any retro feel.
If this is true
" It centers on a picture-perfect family that is turned upside down when the youngest son comes out of the closet. What seems like the end of their idyllic life turns out to be the beginning of a bright new chapter when everyone stops pretending to be perfect and actually starts being real."
Then it is NOT about our family. Hah! "Picture perfect"? only with a very wide angle lens, or one of those old Civil War cameras. everyone be very still . . . .
@34: I may be wrong, but single-camera generally implies a tighter, more edited and polished production, while multi-camera is looser and less edited. Multi-camera is more likely to have a studio audience, single-camera is more likely to have no laugh track. Multi is faster to produce, but requires compromises in production.
Beyond literally what camera setup they're actually using, it generally implies a difference in style or approach. Think 30 Rock or Better Off Ted versus Everybody Loves Raymod or Cheers.
I am a huge Dan Savage fan. I read the columns without fail and I own all the books. Despite that, I hope there is more to the show than a gay teen. Otherwise, the premise feels thin and out of date.

That one won't end well.

I'm sure it couldn't possibly go wrong.

Love you, Dan, congrats! It Gets Better ♥
