Good Morning Charles,
Wow, is "Metropolis" good. One of my favorites by Fritz Lang. You should see "Fury" (1937?) with Spencer Tracy & Myna Loy. Lang at his finest. It is in English.
How sad. You're like one of those kids who cannot tolerate black and white films because they're just too old and colourless. You have my sympathy, Charles.
Silent films usually do have "sound", just not a recorded sound track. Pianists would improvise and get to know a film very well. The larger budget films would many times come with their own scores, complete with sheet music and cues and suggestions for sound effects.
Watching a "silent" version on YouTube does not equal the experience of the average movie goer back then.
