"Castro Street" by Bruce Baillie. From 1966. One of the most beautiful films ever made. It's on a new blu-ray anthology of experimental film, at Scarecrow.
"The Wonder Ring" by Stan Brakhage (and I think Joseph Cornell was involved as well). On volume 2 of the Criterion Brakhage anthology.
Also, "Runaway Train." Amazing film with stunning footage of the snowy northern wilderness.
Haven't caught up with the critical re-assessment of Tony Scott??? Taking Of Pelham 123 is master look at postmodern aesthetics paired up with valences of industrial technology, check it!
I immediately thought of "Trainspotting," which I know is not so much about trains as drugs, but it has a few trainspotting moments.
