A "cute" movie about the air raids and atomic bombing of Hiroshima, really? Just because this movie was animated does not automatically render it or its subject as "cute." Japanese anime is not confined to the "cute" childhood stories like U.S. animation. Not only does Suzette Smith not offer any insights beyond sounding like an elementary schooler who procrastinated on a homework assignment, she clearly, and quite insultingly, does not understand the medium, story, or sheer devastation of Hiroshima. The Stranger, please do better and rethink your writers and editors, because this is disgusting.

Please see The Washington Post's review that details the power of animation to depict a national event and its effect on Japan and its citizens, on Japanese terms:

"Based on manga by the Hiroshima-based artist Fumiyo Kouno, 'Corner' adopts Kouno’s pastel palette and exaggerated facial expressions. Yet it hews to realism — at least until the spreading horror is so extreme that hallucinatory imagery is the only way to make sense of it. 'Corner' is a deeply sympathetic tale, using the possibilities of animation not just to pique curiosity, but to devastate."
