I wouldn't say a lot of female-centric major label bands in the late 80's-early 90s cared about looking pretty. They did care about looking cool. As someone who was obsessed with those bands at the time, a lot of us actually looked down on artists like Liz Phair for trying to be hot because it was seen as cheesy and regressive.
