‘ she rambo ‘ ?

Few things here:
1) You didn’t know it was a genre? Really? I Spit On Your Grave is only one of the most well-known horror movies of all time, so...yeah.
2) Had you been aware of said genre, you would know that extreme gore comes with this territory like night follows day.
3) It’s the perfect time for someone to do something interesting with the concept, so it’s disappointing it apparently doesn’t happen here. Although one could argue that movies like this are inherently subversive given the way they unavoidably mix themes of female empowerment with the exploitation of said females.

'...as the beta-male rapist'

Uh, good job rejecting pernicious stereotypes and fostering healthier gendered expectations, there, Joule.

Yesterday I read the Atlantic review, "Revenge Is a Shocking and Subversive Piece of Horror"
Coralie Fargeat’s debut film tackles one of cinema’s nastiest subgenres—the rape-revenge movie.
Today I read this. Not sure why Joule Zelman is a movie reviewer... though it does give a reflection of an uninformed viewing, which most of us probably are. Kind of random, liking asking your neighbor or co-worker for their opinion.

So she goes a-huntin' for her rapists in a leather string bikini with plenty, plenty shots (I'm sure) of bosom and butt cheek. Poor dear. Victimized twice.

7

Yawn.

Let me know when a movie does something even vaguely original.

It's been said, but c'mon. I Spit On Your Grave is CLASSIC.

9

I prefer my rape-revenge fantasies a little more intimate and grounded. Robert Young's 1986 "Extremities" is a good example.

I Spit On Your Grave was the first movie I ever rented. I wasn't even old enough to drive; I went to the video store with my Dad. He chose Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I chose I Spit On Your Grave. Perfectly normal family, doing family stuff together. I didn't grow up to be a mass murderer. I did like that movie, though.

A big problem I had with this was that the initial wound the girl suffers was too extreme. I couldn't buy that she would survive it.

Maybe if they had a supernatural angle where she dies, but is somehow resurrected by the spirit of the desert/ant god that's crawling over her corpse/whatever so that she can go kill the bastards, I would have enjoyed it more.
