Reminds me of how Robbie orchestrated the "The Last Waltz" as a sort of self-aggrandizing PR move, down to singing center stage into a mic that wasn't even plugged in. I don't recall the details, but my understanding is that Levon's side of the story (as @2 seems to be touching on) paints Robbie as a kind of a dick.
But then, no one but Robbie wrote "The Weight" AND "The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down" so... Maybe he had the right to be a little self-aggrandizing, even if he couldn't sing like the other members.
