The Great Transformation by Polanyi is a good read; I think the context within the book was lost in this article -- the displacement of folk into cities, in the creation of a labor market meant a great deal of pain, and was often poorly managed.
A modern day example would be the movement of manufacturing to China - partly a technical feat, largely a move from those in power, displacing many folk from their stable lives, and putting them into poverty, though the US as a whole benefits economically by the trade, without redistribution many people suffer needlessly. And they did, in many states, suffer needlessly.
The snippet in this article makes it sound more like Polanyi shared in the tough love ignorance of Malthus.
