@1: "Paddy Whacked" describes very well the early Irish experience in America in general, and how mob activity played a part in them getting political and economic power in a country extremely hostile to them. It's a fascinating and very readable book that I highly recommend, along with Herbert Asbury's "The Gangs of New York".
