So, what do you think is the cause of the poor fishing and guns ?

20 some years of communist rule following a military coup, civil war, illegal fishing/dumping by european and africans, and the islamic military Al-Shabaab's need for funds?

What a crazy stereotype! Sort of like thinking that all black American men feel that going to prison is no big deal, or that all dogs are terrified of public transportation.

I'm sorry, I said the "c" word. Siad Barre's rule was based on "scientific socialism"... the guns of course coming from wars with Ethiopia and Soviet/US proxy support.

I like the way this review started with the always stupid complaint about how people producing entertainment don't devote themselves to showing us normal people doing boring things.

@3 - you are gullible if you fall for the "isms". In most countries, ism's are simply "packaging" to re-brand or re-label the old order: meet the new boss, same as the old boss. This is most obvious in places like Russia, England, China, where there is a long history of hegemony by a particular group, but also in relatively newer countries like the US.

Corrupt post-colonial African leaders most resemble their recent colonial overlords: the are generally autocratic kleptocrats. The general form of government - almost everywhere in the world, including the "Dark Continent" - is Feudal. The only interesting differentiation is mobility in and out of the overlord class.

"Communism" - as practiced in, say, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela or China - has never been any less a feudal oligarchy than what we have here in freedom-loving 'murka with the Kochs and "freedomworks". Only very briefly, during immediate post-revolutionary periods, was there any deviation, followed by an immediate return to mining the general populations and physical resources for assets to benefit the very small percentage at the top. These countries and regimes fail when these parasites feed too heavily upon the hosts. China very nearly went the way of Russia and teeters daily on the edge, recognizing that they dare not deprive the bulk of the population too much, lest they be displaced at the head. This is not unlike the US at the end of the Robber Baron era.

There are of course real variations in the degree of civil liberties and the rule of law in these countries, and the degrees of mobility into and out of the ruling class - the US is leaps and bounds (despite the best efforts of ~30% of the polity) ahead of China in terms of Civil Liberties, but in terms of economic share of the pie? We're going broke just like ordinary soviets did, it's just not quite as bad yet.

Please wait...
