I like Ken Loach, and I like left wing, political films. But too many of his films are blundering clichés and embarrassingly heavy handed--especially Jimmy's Hall. When he successfully creates complicated, interesting characters (see Sweet Sixteen and Looking for Eric) the robust politics work. His best work, by far, is the documentary The Spirit of 1945. He cuts out any pretense of a fictional "story" and movingly tells the fascinating, revolutionary history of progress and transformation resulting from the '45 Labour election. Maybe this is the type of film he should have been doing all along?
