Is Edgerton's character the guy who looks like "Dirty Harry" in that still?

Who compared Depp to Brando? When? Depp is pretty and certainly has made some good and fun movies - Ed Wood was hilarious - but there are several actors who have had roles that approached Brando's brilliance and passion and pathos much more than Depp: Jake Gyllenhaal, Lee Pace, Elliot Cowan, Colin Firth, Jack Nicholson, and several of the Brits now toiling in the bloody historicals on cable, for instance.
Certainly Brando liked practical jokes and disguises and accents, but he was much more than The Missouri Breaks or The God Father. He had a huge range, and he could devastate you without any words, just by expressions on his face and slight body movements. Depp could never do Reflections in a Golden Eye, or Burn! or A Dry White Season.

There's a reason why Brando has been dead for over a decade and thousands around the world still wish him Happy Birthday on April 3rd every year.

Don't know if The Cumberbatch ever was a character actor, but he hasn't been one since the first episode of Sherlock. I think Elliot Cowan, Lee Pace, John Hamm, Dan Stevens, Tom Riley and Idris Elba are better and deeper and more versatile actors - but Benedict's energy in Sherlock mesmerized, and he's now the next big thing, a taller, younger, more suave Robert Downey Jr with a better sense of humor and a lovely accent, and unlike the F&G Bros and interchangable Marvel men in tights, he can ACT.

Johnny should move here. He'd blend right in up on Capitol Hill, where men wearing "goofy makeup" is pretty much the norm.

Meh. Not really much of a fan of younger actors being made-up to look older when we already know that they aren't nearly s old as the character they're portraying. Leo as J. Edgar certainly comes to mind.

Without even seeing the film --- and I still might --- seeing Ed Harris in the lead role would've made it more believable for me. Too much risk of me cynically muttering "that's Johnny Depp in make-up" throughout the entire film, with him being cast as the lead.

Please wait...
