I highly recommend a trip to Turkey and taking bus rides across the country. The stewardess (flight attendant? bus attendant?) will bring you Nescafe and a cookie, and you'll be treated to similar terrible movies shown on a 15" CRT television mounted at the front of the bus.

Also, for a bit of a feel of this side of Turkish culture, I recommend the book The New Life by Orhan Pamuk.

@1:

Did just that in the late '70's, taking the bus from Adapazari to Kefken on the Black Sea. Not a long trip distance-wise, but still took us a good half day. I don't think we got Nescafe, but did drink lots of hot, black, çay and sugar.

And if you want to make it a double feature day, I suggest also adding a viewing of the 1973 "comedy" "Turist Ömer Uzay Yolunda" (AKA Turkish Star Trek), a totally wack (as in embarrassingly inept) send-up of the very first TOS episode "The Man Trap", with a mish-mash of references to several others, including "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", "Arena" and "Amok Time".

True, Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam may win the prize for epic terribleness, but if you've only seen that film, you've just scratched the surface of Cuneyt Tarkin's film legacy. I'd encourage anyone interested to move to Turkey, live with a Turkish family and watch TV for hours on end. You'll see hours of crap, and then be unexpectedly rewarded by the brilliance of some new Tarkin film some Sunday afternoon.

Please wait...
