The line outside Voodoo Donuts in downtown Portland yesterday stretched down the block and around the corner. Voodoo's bacon maple bar—what everyone was lined up for—is the Beanie Baby of deep-fried dough. A limited supply creates a perception of scarcity which stokes demand... and stupidity. Don't get me wrong: the donuts at Voodoo are awesome and my boyfriend requires bacon maple bars. But no donut is worth standing in line for an hour or more. And what is it with Americans and sugar anyway? About the only things we'll wait in a Soviet-era-Russians-lined-up-for-toilet-paper style lines for are donuts and cupcakes. You would think donuts and cupcakes were hard to come by in the USA instead of hard to avoid.
