Hopefully my uncle Gil reads this. I haven't seen him in 30+ years. Give your nephew a call, I'm in the book.
2
The Viking is gone but at least we get another overpriced soulless condo building.
3
RIP entertaining if disconcerting experience of seeing club goers at the top of Pacific Place.
4
So sorry to see Nook go. That place was awesome. The owners were probably exhausted with all the work--it was usually just the two of them.
5
PNK had a nice run when they had a consistent GM. That catastrophe was top down for sure.

Mae's. :(
6
Nook's not gone! It just changed owners (and name, I guess). I was just in there a couple weeks ago -- still making the same delicious biscuit sammiches.
7
Sad to see Mona's go. Cue little neighborhood bar, great for an early-evening cocktail. I would have gone there all the time if I lived closer.
8
The vegan shoe place is being taken over by a smoked meat shop. I hope they keep the vegan mural, if only for irony's sake.
9
@6 They are using different recipes. The new owner stated he couldn't afford to buy them from Nook.

Any news on what is replacing the Baskin Robbins? That's a prime location.
10
I used to work at the Baskin Robbins in the late 80's. It's crazy that its closing. It seems like it should be there forever.

I really wanted to like Nook. I live a short walk away and they were very friendly (and I loved the owl logo), but for a biscuit-themed place, the biscuits were too dense for my taste.
The Ballard Elks Lodge (out toward Golden Gardens) nabbed the Viking's shuffleboard table for their lounge. It's members-only, but the view of the sound is fantastic, the drinks are cheap, we've been gaining hordes of younger members - and we love love love new members!
12
Holy shit there's some icons and institutions on this list! Viking closure sucks; blame the condos if you want but the owner's the one who chose that route for cashing out.
13
Oh and #11 I say fuck the Elks in their filthy shitbag faces until they drop their sole criteria for denying Americans membership - no Atheists allowed. The Boston bombers qualify but millions of hardworking good-living people don't because we don't belief that a magic man in the sky is calling all the shots. Elks can eat a bag of dicks, shit them out, and eat them again cold.
14
@13, I and many other Elks are proud atheists. We also contribute quite a lot to local charities with money and action and have thoughtful debates about community and religion without stooping to name-calling and insults. It's sunny outside. Have a nice day.

Outside of the national organization's express statement that you need to believe in god to apply I hear you. As long as hide your (lack of) belief in god at first everything's cool? Fuck that and fuck them.

The First Hill Bar and Grill deserved to close. As a night shift medical worker at various institutions on Pill Hill over the years, I (& many others) would have embraced a place nearby where we could get a steak and a whiskey at 8AM. Instead, when I ventured in there they were surly and unhelpful and acted like I was putting them out ordering food, much less a simple drink. No better when they reopened after what seemed like a long hiatus either. Good riddance.

Also, Herfy's Burgers in Fremont is gone.

@ 2 why does a condo building need soul, don't be a hippie.
19
Lots of sad on this list (most notably the Grill, Viking, and Mae's) but the biggest wtf moment for me was this coffee and toast place. Never even heard of it and we breakfast/brunch out in Ballard at least twice a week. Perhaps advertising and visibility was the problem? Or is this just me?

p.s. My thumb thanks you for the mention, Bethany.

MONA'S, Green Lake: After 101 years, the restaurant/lounge/jazz venue has been taken over by Krittika's Thai next door, according to Eater Seattle.

Nice. An other Thai joint in Seattle.

@6 and @9: It's true, different owners and a different recipe:

@8: Me too.

@19: Everybody at the office wants to know what happened to your thumb at the Viking!!! Or maybe it's more exciting as a mystery???

I had many a terrifc lunch at First Hill Bar & Grill when I toiled at Virginia Mason. Yes, the place was divey, but the fries were always awesome.

The one and only time I was in iBurger, it seemed far more like a teriaki shop than a burger joint. The burger was just adequate. This closing is no surprise.
23
Herfy's in Fremont, also as much teriaki shop as burger joint. And again, just adequate burgers (especially for not being far from Uneeda Burger).

Hmmm. I sense a pattern here. Don't do teriaki and burgers at the same joint.
24
@21 It's definitely more exciting as a mystery but I can tell you it was one hell of a night.
25
Chocolate Shoebox is still operating online.

solution after a visit to the pub.
