This reminds me of that time they named places in the United States after the Native Americans we stole them from.
2
Gee, wouldn't it be FUNNY if we combined brunch with RAP?

Reminds me of the soul themed Hebb dinnerI went to at Neumos that featured fried chicken (and no hot sauce) with a refreshing watermelon salad. I sat next to a talkative, worldly white lady who kept wanting to touch my hair. Good ol NW cluelessness.
3
I almost wish this was the more expected "well my name is Rick, and I'm here to say" type of swing-and-a-miss vs whatever the hell this is.
4
what if they changed it to all white-rapper references?

better? or worse?
5
Qui recolt la culture noire américaine, sème la sang mauvaise.
6
I was fine until the purple drank. It has to have dimethicaine and come in a Styrofoam cup.
7
"it’s painful to see white-owned businesses try and make money off of black culture"

You mean, like, the rap industry itself?
8
I mean promethazine, and codeine.
9
Squalk. Would it help if they have black friends? But seriously, I expected something really offensive in this post and just couldn't find anything that wasn't already prevalent in the music industry, for example, and maybe a thing or two to roll your eyes at, but a screed? If you're cringing at this, I wonder how you get through the day, or walk down the street.
10
You want to reference something from pop culture from almost 30 years ago? sorry you can't because reasons.

Why doesn't the stranger just repost tumblr? it would be easier than paying "writers" like this.
11
Gimme that nutt!
12
You know, they could just switch up the menu with some new dishes without the corny/offensive joke aspect. The food will no doubt be great and I like the brunch DJ idea.
13
White entrepreneurs co-opting black culture to make money. Not news.
14
Would have been great if they used bacon (a slang for cop) in Public Enemy #1.

Also, from what I guess is the "press release" you speak of:

"Chef Eric Donnelly gets a chance to combine old school hip-hop and stellar food in his brunch specials, which is basically his dream come true."

Which really makes me wonder why you'd read this brunch as white ignorance rather than a tribute.
15
This is such a stretch to make news. Why is Rap music suddenly only allowed to be claimed by 'Black Culture'. Should we burn all of Macklemore's albums? What about the three white Jewish kids from NY who helped bring the genre mainstream and are well respected by their peers. Yes - peers - white/black/Asian - whatever. Rap is for everyone. It is not 'owned' by a particular group of people.

Would you have written the same story if a black-owned restaurant wanted to serve brunch to Peking Opera and had dishes named 'Sheng's Hush Puppies' or 'Fried Jing Chicken'?

What a stupid way to try and stir up controversy. You're entitled to an opinion but to attempt to pin racism on a business that clearly is not attempting to capitalize on race or racial issues is just ignorant. I second Cliche's comments above.
16
@15:

Rap <> Hip-Hop.
17
For those still unfamiliar with the SJW argot,

Problematic = I am vaguely offended about something but am too lazy to say exactly what it is. Plz follow me on tumblr.
18
Problematic; Privilege; Ignorance;

A Tumblr hat trick, if not bingo. I'm unsure if brunch should count as four, but congrats all the same.
19
NWA was the gimmick brainchild of Andre Young ("Dr. Dre") to make money off black culture. You being faux-outraged on behalf of black people to earn what you almost certainly view as "SJW street cred" is a far greater sin than the cheesy yuppie brunch.
20
At least Del and Bay Area rap are represented; all is forgiven.
21
Serious question: do we have any black people sounding off here in addition to Mr. Mizell?

I ask because I don't feel I'm in a position to gauge how offensive this is, being a white dude and all. And while my gut says if you have to wonder, don't go there, I also wonder if presuming offense is not itself a bit patronizing?
22
WTF is wrong with these idiots?
23
Yeah, but if NWA was bacon, eggs, and crack, it'd be racist.

The KRS-ONE should be beans, rice, and bread. On a shelf.
25
Eric B & Rakim. Fish which is their favorite dish. If you knew the Chef you would know his passion for old school hip hop. What a shoddily written article. Not well thought out at all.
26
It's a real shame that, because of RockCreek's hip hop brunch menu, blacks will remain disproportionately disadvantaged and police will continue shooting black kids without justification.

If only RockCreek had not appropriated hip hop culture, or at least had better timing about it, these tragic stains on American society would have been fixed shortly.

Americans at large were just on the precipice of enlightenment to the struggles evinced by the lyrical stylings of NWA and Public Enemy, from which, after so many long centuries, the system of racial injustice would surely be torn asunder, and from which a more just society could have arisen.

But lo, RockCreek did thwart the noble march of history with their hip hop brunch menu.
27
here we see again the message "disavow class struggle for the sake of this product". not just problematic, counter-revolutionary!
28
here we see again the message "disavow class struggle for the sake of this product". not just problematic, but counter-revolutionary! it really depends on what you want to eat for breakfast. i would recommend chicken livers and eggs.
29
double triple post 333x !!!!!!!!!!
30
Not sure how anyone could think this would go over well. Poooooor taste.
31
This reads as ignorance. Just stop.

Trolls will be trolls. If you knew the chef at all you would be ashamed of yourself. Good luck lady.
32
it'd be cool if it was actual recipes from hip hop culture luminaries. i'd try pete rock's quiche recipe. it'd be cool if big daddy kane had a really classic peanut butter pancake thing he wanted to offer. maybe they could reach out and find out what diamond d whips up on saturday morning.

that said, i know what ATCQ WOULD'NT eat for breakfast...

33
This is just your liberal guilt speaking. If the theme were shitty puns based off 80s hair mental bands you probably wouldn't blink. Yes yes, America has shameful race relations present/history, but hip hop IS the mainstream now, fully mainstream. You can't listen to bubble gum pop without at least a little bit of rapping and a hip hop beat. At some point we have to allow for cultural assimilation and not feverishly rebuild these walls. There isn't a white teenager in america that wasn't born listening to rap. Like fuck it, at what point can we ever say that hip hop is an AMERICAN cultural form, not just a black one? What more needs to happen? Or are we that committed to living in a race-based society?
34
Ok, here's the thing. Yes Hip-Hop is black. But it's also AMERICAN! I am a white guy that grew up listening to NWA. I also have about as much street cred as Dr. Dre (who grew up middle class in a decent neighborhood).
35
Test
36
Maybe if Philly Fevre and Catfish Corner sold a quality product they would still be open. It's 2015 in the PNW, people want quality, homemade food. Not frozen french fries out of a bag. The restaurant business is very fickle.
37
Angela,

Your outrage @ Rock Creek's brunch menu is misplaced and pathetic. Thanks, -The Rest of Seattle.
38
non-issue.
39
Your an ass clown and the one being racist
39
Bethany, you're white. Shut the hell up.
39
Bethany, you're obviously over-compensating as a white person who fears being racist, sit down. Speaking on behalf of African Americans is much more racist than this non-issue you've found a way to pick apart.
39
So is Rock Creek a demonstration of capitalizing on a culture's popularity, or is it simply a celebration? Real fine line. Also, echo aypobrecita. For sure.
39
So is Rock Creek a demonstration of capitalizing on a culture's popularity, or is it simply a celebration and appreciation? Why bring race into it? Real fine line you're walking.

Also, echo @aypobrecita. For sure. Ego-based ignorance at it's finest.

But good for you, Miss Garbes, for stating your opinion. That's what's supposedly so great about America, ja?
39
I am shocked at such irresponsible journalism that would imply that a celebration of what an artist/chef loves is exploitive. I guess he should never attempt a Joan Baez brunch because how would he know the plight of an aging feminist?

Seriously, music, and all art for that matter including food, is created to share with other people. All people, not just a subset. Have you checked out the demographic of Public Enemy's listeners? I suppose by the logic of this article that Chuck D must be pissed that all these white kids came to their concerts and exploited their art.

Congratulations Eric for putting your neck out their and sharing your love of Hip Hop/ Rap/whatever with your customers. To some, it adds an unexpected dimension to your mind of a chef, but to most, I believe it makes you human, capable of having influences from ALL cultures, and celebrating them in the way that means the most to you. Bravo for being a true artist.
