Chop Shop Cafe and Bar, from chef Ericka Burke (Volunteer Park Cafe) opens today at 5:30 p.m. in the new Chophouse Row complex on Capitol Hill. The food all sounds very good: small plates of local, seasonal food, with plenty of vegetables. Chop Shop also promises that a signature meat chop (pork, lamb, etc.) will always be on the menu, an idea I love.
But reading over the press release, I got stuck on this sentence: "The restaurant’s dishes will play masculine and feminine elements against each other—say, a perfectly crisp roast chicken or rare steak, served with bright vegetable-based sauces and bold sides."
I get that everything is gendered nowadays, but I have a couple of quick questions: Which of these elements are supposed to be masculine and which are supposed to be feminine, exactly? Does a rare, bloody steak suggest manhood? More than a crispy-skinned piece of chicken? And does that mean a breast is more feminine than a wing? And what of these "bold sides"???
