I've been to Plum twice for brunch, and wanted to like it, but didn't. My experience both times has been average food, let down by indifferent service, at high prices.
I recently went to Plum Bistro for dinner and thought it was great. But yeah, pretty pricey.
I'm a happy omnivore and have no aversion to eating meat or meat products, but one of my favorite restaurants in the city is Harvest Beat over in Wallingford. It's not cheap, but it's completely worth the price. For under $60 a person you get an absolutely incredible multi-course gourmet meal that will completely change any perceptions you might have about vegan food.
I was at Plum this weekend, and it was an awful experience. As soon as we sat down, the host spilled water on my boyfriendâs sister. Then, the waiter mis-gendered her even though she was obviously presenting as female (eyeshadow, lipstick, feminine clothing). Also, I have a soy allergy, and despite the fact that the menu indicates that there should be a soy free option, there was none. I had coffee while the rest of my table had their meal. The waiter didnât bother to ask the cooks if they could come up with a few options for me. For me, the authorâs headline âPlum proves that going vegan doesnât mean giving up sinful comfort food,â is completely wrong. Not only did I have to give up âsinful comfort food,â I had to give up food altogether. Not a good look.
I wouldâve written this off as just something to expect at a vegan restaurant (seriously folks, you need more in your diet than soy), but the transphobia from the waiter was absolutely unacceptable. I wonât be going back, and hope that waiter is fired.
Plum Bistro is excellent. Never had a bad meal, never had bad service, and I don't think the prices are that high considering you'd pay similar prices for something down the street that is not nearly as interesting.
Your article doesn't mention the AMAZING 'burgers'. Perhaps the best burger I've ever had (this includes meat) was the smoked tofu version of a big American burger with fries. They haven't had this on the menu for a while, but it blew me away. The other burgers they regularly offer are great too, unique and filling and flavorful.
Back when I lived on Capitol Hill, I was a regular at Plum Bistro. The only problems came from the great popularity of the place, combined with the small space and some American patrons who donât know what âinside voiceâ means. Plum is still an automatic for when we have out-of-town visitors. Plus, Makini Howell (Plumâs owner) led the fights for sick time and minimum wage.
In addition to the great food, their cocktails are also excellent.
