Back in the Day (1979), I opened a little place in northern California that didn't really need another restaurant, but where one was desired. The rule of thumb back then was: Of 10 places that opened in '79, 7 would be gone or under new ownership by 1980. Of the 3 remaining, 2 would be gone by 1981. And the 1 of 10 to stay alive, it might make it to 1984 as 1 of 3 out of 100. Tough business for longevity. Guess I was lucky making it to 1984, eh?!
