We Sat Down to Stand Up Against the Israeli State’s War on the People of Gaza
Last Friday night six of us Jews occupied Sen. Patty Murray’s Seattle office, demanding to meet with her, while 100 other Jews and allies rallied outside the Federal Building.
Jewish Voice for Peace
I heard a great line last night on a talk show. "If Palestine laid down their arms tomorrow there would be no more conflict, if Israel laid down their arms tomorrow there will be no more Jews". It's mind boggling to me to watch the sheer illogic of the progressive left siding with a movement whose stated intention is genocide and if given the opportunity would plunge a knife into the back of the Jews standing side by side with them in solidarity. One of the only positives that is coming out of this conflict is many Americans are finally realizing just how awful the progressive left has become.
Thank you. I love this action and hope this movement continues to grow. It is so important that there are members of our Jewish community willing to stand up and show support for the people in Gaza. The sad reality is that this same action if done by Palestinian people would likely face much less gentle of treatment by Federal Police and far harsher consequences… if they even made it inside.
So do groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, countries such as Iran, Syria, and Saudi Arabia have ANY responsibility or accountability in this mess? Does Hamas get to keep their stated objective of wiping Israel off the map before real progress on a lasting peace? Do the Israeli people get to have any agency in their collective security or is this yet another exception to the American imperialism complaints?
Progressives love to give their house Jews a pat on the head. Yes aren't they good! If only all of us could be like them. And then there's Jewish Voices for Peace, if not now when, Jews for Economic and Racial Justice. They all have one thing in common. They will never ever stand up for anti-Semitism when it's coming from the left, black nationalists or islamists. They spend most of their time criticizing Jews and the rest of the time blaming anti-Semitism solely on white supremacy. Interesting that any Jewish person who actually has a backbone and criticizes other minorities isn't allowed within 6,000 ft of any progressive movement.
That said, Israel does deserve criticism. So do the people on college campuses openly praising the massacre as brave. And the gas lighting, telling us that open celebration of murdering Jewish civilians is criticism of Israel and support for the Palestinians. We live in a society where a Jewish Parkland survivor had his acceptance to Harvard revoked because he used the n-word and private texts 5 years earlier. Yet black professors who openly praise the massacre of Jews teach on campus.
If you're not condemning the anti-Semitism that is openly expoused under the banner of Palestinian advocacy or black advocacy in this very city, then don't expect us Jews to be condemning the wrongs of our people on another continent. Thank you.
@1: “One of the only positives that is coming out of this conflict is many Americans are finally realizing just how awful the progressive left has become.”
Money quote: “That’s how you end up with Queers for Palestine when being queer in Palestine is difficult and dangerous. (In 2016, a Hamas commander was executed after being accused of theft and gay sex.)”
@7: Indeed, why can’t the Jews and Muslims just settle their differences like good Christians? ;-)
It brings me joy that most all of the commenters here have much more understanding of the nuanced issues in this conflict than the "progressive" left. I'm not surprised the author works for Kashma Sawant.
@1 - so true. The professed goal of Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran is to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. Hard to work diplomatically with that.
Why Six Jewish Community Members Got Arrested in Patty Murray’s Office Friday Night??
Because they wanted to get arrested.
Anti-zionist attention seeking Jews unite!!
If you want more attention, bring water bottles to Gaza, become saviors of the down trodden, and serve as human shields for Hamas Leadership.
You'll go down in history, mentioned at every secular holiday for eternity starting with Halloween in 2023.
@1 "If Palestine laid down their arms tomorrow there would be no more conflict, if Israel laid down their arms tomorrow there will be no more Jews."
Yes, I've been hearing that line for decades. It may well have been true under the likes of Meir and Rabin, but do you really believe Netanyahu and Gallant would fail to seize such an amazing opportunity to rid themselves of the Palestinian "problem" once and for all? I sure don't.
@23 it’s not a Palestinian problem, it’s a Hamas problem. In any case it doesn’t matter because we all know Hamas will never lay down their weapons much less accept Jewish neighbors.
Israel explicitly and repeatedly told north Gazan civilians to evacuate to the south -- and now they're bombing the south! Even if they didn't bomb the hospital, by their own admission they're bombing the south. Just that fact alone vindicates this protest.

It’s even harder to believe it when you learn that Egyptian intelligence warned Israel of a coming attack shortly before it happened. It’s harder still when you learn that according to CNN, US officials were circulating ‘reporting from Israel indicating unusual activity by Hamas’ on October 6.”

from "the Left":
Israel’s Culture of Deceit
Israel, which always seeks to
blame Palestinians for the atrocities it
carries out, is the least trustworthy source
about the bombing of the hospital in Gaza.
Israel was founded on lies. The lie that Palestinian land was largely unoccupied. The lie that 750,000 Palestinians fled their homes and villages during their ethnic cleansing by Zionist militias in 1948 because they were told to do so by Arab leaders.
The lie that it was Arab armies that started the 1948 war that saw Israel seize 78 percent of historic Palestine. The lie that Israel faced annihilation in 1967, forcing it to invade and occupy the remaining 22 percent of Palestine, as well as land belonging to Egypt and Syria.
Israel is sustained by lies. The lie that Israel wants a just and equitable peace and will support a Palestinian state. The lie that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. The lie that Israel is an “outpost of Western civilization in a sea of barbarism.” The lie that Israel respects the rule of law and human rights.
Israel’s atrocities against the Palestinians are always greeted with lies. I heard them. I recorded them. I published them in my stories for The New York Times when I was the paper’s Middle East Bureau Chief.
@41: Nice try. You stated as fact that Israel had bombed a hospital, and that the US taxpayers were therefore complicit in an atrocity. When what little evidence available seemed to point towards Hamas, you quickly denounced a source you yourself frequently cite (!).
And yeah, your calm, measured responses are truly the work of a wise person who treats other comments skeptically. (Snort!)
“Israel engages in the kinds of jaw-dropping lies that characterize despotic regimes. It does not deform the truth, it inverts it. It paints a picture that is diametrically opposed to reality.
Those of us who have covered the occupied territories have run into Israel’s Alice-in-Wonderland narratives, which we dutifully insert into our stories — required under the rules of American journalism — although we know they are untrue.
[hedges was nyt's middle eastern
bureau chief for Years]
Israel has invented an Orwellian lexicon. Children killed by Israelis become children caught in crossfire. The bombing of residential districts, with dozens of dead and wounded, becomes a surgical strike on a bomb-making factory. The destruction of Palestinian homes becomes the demolition of the homes of terrorists.
The Big Lie — Große Lüge — feeds the two reactions Israel seeks to elicit — racism among its supporters and terror among its victims. The Big Lies fosters the myth of a clash of civilizations, a war between democracy, decency and honor on one side and Islamic terrorism, barbarism and medievalism on the other.”
@45: So, you’re denying what you wrote @27? From nice try to total fail. Congratulations.
@46: After what Hedges wrote, neither I nor anyone else has any need to attack his alleged credibility. Thank you for amplifying his auto-discrediting.
(You might want to take a break from this, and read an actual history book or three about the region. Your contortions even look painful; I can only imagine how they must feel.)
@48: Lamer and lamer become your attempts to dodge. US taxpayers now support Hamas’ bomb-makers? Or are you claiming something even more ludicrous? Perhaps by this point, you believe the US itself destroyed the hospital?
You’re so far out beyond your shallows here, you actually believe (@31) a U.S. President could, all by his lonesome, credibly threaten the Israelis with loss of aid. Try reading some books on American history, too.
Look, I get it. Given the choice between taking ownership of your words, or a kicking, biting, scratching, screaming, and flailing refusal to do so, you always pick the latter. This, your sole display of good judgment, is the only reason I still have a smidge of hope for you. But the malevolent ignorance you’ve repeatedly displayed here seems excessive, even for you.
I really am serious when I recommend you take a break from this ongoing auto-humiliation, and educate yourself on the long (by which, in deference to your attention span, I mean “about a century”) and bloody history of this region. You could find very few clean hands, plenty of blame just about everywhere (although not always in equal measure all around), and no easy solutions.
The owners
of the Gaza hospital
hit by a deadly blast said Israeli
soldiers had warned them to evacuate.
The administrator of a Gazan hospital rocked by a deadly explosion on Tuesday night has said that the Israeli military repeatedly warned the hospital’s management in recent days to evacuate the site.
Video posted after the Saturday attack — and verified by The New York Times — showed damage inside the hospital. The footage also showed the remnants of an artillery shell amid the debris.
Palestinian armed groups have typically relied on long-range artillery rockets to strike inside Israel and have not been recorded using howitzers that fire shells of this type. But Israel commonly uses howitzers to strike inside Palestinian areas.
Archbishop Naoum said the warnings were particular to the hospital, and not part of Israel’s wider push to encourage civilians to leave northern Gaza for the territory’s south.
“There were specific warnings to get out of the building,” the archbishop said.
@50: You’re really just itching to pin this particular atrocity on the Israelis, aren’t you?
(All of those civilians will remain dead, you know, no matter who pulled the trigger, or stored the explosives improperly, or whatever. You know that, right? Because you’ve given little indication that you do.)
Glad to see the New York Times return to your good graces. I’m sure everyone there was devastated and heartbroken by your cessation of copy-pasting from their comment sections. All it took was for them to stop providing information which you happen not to like, and return to furnishing only that information which comports fully with your predetermined conclusions! Amazing how that works.
