I gotta give credit where credit is due. When people in desperate situations recognize you and thank you for your kindness, its nice to know one isnt alone working discreetly on the front lines. A real angel isnt always seen but is always felt when they leave their mark.
2
Maybe you're the exception, but most of the "homeless" in the Jungle are "Homeless By Choice". In general, they believe that society has an obligation to support their chosen lifestyle that does not include gainful employment and integration into normal society.

That's a great story. Too bad the artist completely undid their humanity with a stereotypical drawing of a homeless person. I wonder if he even read the I, Anonymous or if the Stranger just said "hey, we've got one about a homeless person and a librarian!" Oh well, at least the story is good. Kudos to the librarian.

@2 I agree to some extent. But we have to remember that not all panhandlers are homeless and not all homeless are panhandlers. I mean In not a fan of any of them for the reasons you listed, but I try to keep a perspective.
5
@3: No, I think the artist captured the typical Seattle Homeless By Choice loser quite well.
6
@5 I see you've spent a lot of effort building a world-view to justify your hatred of the most vulnerable human population in Seattle. Way to stick with it.
7
A woman living in a shelter with her kids to escape an abusive parter is homeless. A dirtbag living on public property wanting handouts so he can smoke and get loaded in peace is not homeless. He's a bum. We used to know the difference in this country.
8
@7: indeed, we had hierarchies. hoboes looked down on bums.

@7 I don't really see the point in engaging bigots, but here goes. Drug use and homelessness can be linked, yes, but it's very much a chicken and egg question, while there are those who become homeless as a result of drug use, there are more who turn to drug use out of despair related to homelessness. This is why housing first works. Your comments show both a lack of compassion as well as ignorance.
10
@9, no, there's no point engaging bigots with well-reasoned replies. If you need to respond, it's easier and no less effective to just tell them to shut the f*ck up.

@6 My guess is you really don't spend much time downtown, and have never been to The Jungle. But do pontificate on... I'm going to guess that either you or your boyfriend have a crew cut and a big old beard, and wear boots. When you're drinking your PBR...

I came to make a similar comment about the inappropriate artwork.

Why are people talking about "the homeless" as if they can be all lumped together as one monolith?

This I, Anonymous is an individual who was touched by kindness and got out of there.

This carping -- and that artwork -- is seriously off-topic.

I am incredibly proud of the action that a staff member of MY library took to help out another person in need. You know, if we all just tried hard to follow the Golden Rule (treat others as you want to be treated) and acted like we are all in this together like MY librarian did, our world would be a better place. Peace out

The artwork shits on the sentiment.

God, the Politically Correct Hipsters of Seattle should just go back to where they came from, which for the majority is not Seattle. Or maybe they could just shut up. Maybe Amazon or Whole Foods or where ever these overly sensitive children work could move to UTAH?
16
Or maybe ARTY "could just shut up"?

Perhaps look in the mirror and take his own impassioned advice?

(I'm not a hipster, by the way. I'm a 62 year old accountant who is puzzled by those slouch hats and the soul patches or whatever uniform is currently extant. I have been terminally uncool my entire life and have never understood the desire to BE cool. I do, however, yearn to be kinder than I actually am.)

Please wait...
