As a bicyclist, I sympathize with your frustration. As a senior I appreciate your reflection on how things could have gone better.

3

Good job, now everyone hates cyclists just a little more!

4

That was very nice of you to apologize. Are you single?

5

You are the type of rider that makes life worse for all other bike riders, including this “senior” rider. The peds saw you coming at them and could not judge your intent, so they froze. This is a perfectly reasonable response. Quit being such an asshole on two wheels.

8

Seattle City roads were expanded to allow for greater use of the bicycle well before the automobile was invented.
Bicycling was a very popular recreation in pioneer Seattle long before any car came to kill anyone.
Bikes were here first you welfare queen, car-driving whiners. Eat yer own stupid rhetoric.

This ANON article is not about cars vs bikes. It is just someone being rude who apologized for it later. Nothing more. It happens everywhere. No big deal.

11

6: I assure you I do not hate myself. I just try to be a courteous and non-aggressive operator of either my bicycles or big-ass SUV. If on your bike or in your car you cause people of any age to freeze in fear of collision then yell at them, you are a fucking asshole. Bikes and cars have brakes, and should be used properly. It is pretty easy stuff. Why do you find it challenging?

12

Sweet.

13

This is soooooo Seattle. Rather than apologizing to their face, even if it requires you to stop (gasp! that's unheard of in the cycling world) & double-back for a minute, you anonymously post an apology to the Seattle newspaper least likely to be read by old people.

All the applause for "trying to make things right", while literally doing nothing to actually rectify your actions.

14

13: Spot on.

15

Douchebag acts like douchebag. Surprising.

16

@6- STFU with the psych 101 analysis.

"Automobile drivers EVERY MINUTE kill and menace pedestrians in and out of crosswalks" and enough with the histrionics.

17

@7- "hundreds of lives and billions of dollars would be saved every year in Seattle."- there were 109 people killed in all of Washington state in 2017. Again, enough with the histrionics.

19

17: Facts? The MAGA hat wearers out there don't need no stinkin' "facts".

20

Cool, you had a teachable moment. I learn by making mistakes too, as do many others.

And when I have one of those moments, I always tell myself that in the future, it's a lot easier to ask permission than it is to apologize.

21

@13 -- Golden Star for YOU.

22

19: WTF? Why are you dragging Trump into this discussion?! Trying to be funny? Sorry, big fail there. Must be mental midget hour.

23

Dear DrummerGrrl. SIGH. Remember the Transitive Property of Equality from Algebra and logic class? If A=B and B=C, then A=C. This was a poke at #7 for pulling completely bogus numbers out of the air, or out of his butt, or out of wherever in support of his rhetoric. And who else on the current scene is given to such? Perhaps The Great Orange One and the MAGA crowd? So it was a way of saying he is swimming in the same fouled waters. (That was a METAPHOR)
Got it?

24

@7 @17 @19
"A report released today by the Governors Highway Safety Association shows that the number of pedestrians killed in traffic jumped 11 percent last year, to nearly 6,000. That's the biggest single-year increase in pedestrian fatalities ever, and the highest number in more than two decades." Mar 30, 2017

Pedestrian Fatalities Increase 11 Percent In A Year : NPR
https://www.npr.org/2017/03/30/.../2016-saw-a-record-increase-in-pedestrian-deaths
Oh, and car accidents in general kill about 37K per year. It's the leading cause of death in US males ages 16-25.

25

@24- that's cute but as we are addressing the absurd claims by @7 that "hundreds of lives and billions of dollars would be saved every year in Seattle" let's stick to that:

"During 2016 in Seattle, five pedestrians and three bicyclists died in traffic crashes, according to the city’s 2017 Traffic Report."

"a report from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) says the number of people killed while walking or riding a bike on public roads in the state rose to 122 last year, up from 60 in 2013."

Now kindly go back to protesting white women making burritos.

26

As a pedestrian I’m fed up with entitled asshole ableist cyclists. They want us to spend millions on these stupid bike lanes they don’t even use. Instead, these dicks ride on the sidewalk and yell at me and my dog if we go inconvenience them.
Fuck bicycles in Seattle. California is better where it’s illegal to ride on the sidewalks.

27

I'm sure the senior couple will be feeling much better once they see this apology here in The Stranger.

28

@13: The hippies of the 60's and 70's are today's 'old people' whom enjoy The Stranger.

29

“It's the leading cause of death in US males ages 16-25.”

Exactly. Self-inflicted.

30

@26 Holy cow I looked it up and it really is legal to ride a bike on the sidewalk in Seattle. WTF podunk crap is that yall? I ride a bike, but biking on the sidewalk is up there with littering and yelling at women out car windows. Real lowlife shit*.

*I'll give downtown messengers a pass. They generally know what they are doing.
