we don't deserve this planet, and the planet is letting us know.

Before everyone gets all self righteous with the BYOB thing, you should check out this video on the impacts of reusable grocery bags. Spoiler: They are not really better.

do we really need all those
stinkin’ sea turtles anyway?

QFC and Safeway recycle plastic bags and film. There are bins at 1 of the entrances in every store in the city. They get every type of plastic film I can think to put in there, except what's had meat in it.

Do they actually recycle it? No clue.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is not now nor ever was composed of discarded plastic grocery bags from Seattle. The Bag Tax was always a feeble band-aid more about making people feel like they were "doing something" than about solving the problem it was purported to solve.

@7 it's true that like most cloth products, tote bags are an ecological catastrophe. But once you've already got one or two, you should at least use them. If you've donated to any major non-profit in the last 25 years, I guarantee you've got one, so the damage is done. Not to say I haven't occasionally forgotten mine, but that's the way to think about it.

12

When you think, "I'm going to the grocery store," do you also forget your wallet? Your house keys? Car keys? Your pants?

How hard is it to remember to bring your own bag? I have heavy plastic bags I've been reusing for over 10 years, because here in Europe they've been charging around 20 cents for bags for as long as I've lived here (about 25 years). Americans who bitch about this stuff act like it's some hairbrained, half-assed scheme their local government dreamt up. This is just normal, practical stuff others have no difficulty doing, and have long since adjusted to.

Thicker plastic bags are (supposed to be) reusable. Thereby encouraging shoppers to take them home instead of pitching them in the parking lot shrubbery. Why people can't wait to unbag their groceries until they are home and within range of a suitable waste bin I can't figure.

Anyway, I miss the thin plastic bags. When one has a dog, there is no such thing as a single use bag.

"When you think, 'I'm
going to the grocery store,'
do you also forget your wallet?"

no, Silly. it's
in my hip

"Your house keys?"
left front pocket.

"Car keys?"

"Your pants?"

this is
Ridiculous.
Plus I simply cut
two small holes in my
Grocery Bags & Wear them
o'er my head. I NEVER forget
the bag. but it's Hard af to See.

@14: I carry all of those items on any trip out of the house. But there are times when Management messages me on my way home from work about picking up a few items at the store.

16

if them thick honkers are too much to keep up with, invest in reusable bags that fold to fit inside a neat pocket-sized pouch. Baggu has cool designs that make you want to carry them around. i haven't forgotten to bring my own bags in years because bart-simpson-having-a-hard-time-levitating is fun to show off

17

lots of aggro commenters here without ADHD.

Besides, blaming the consumer for the choices of corporations is dumb

@7 The number I've heard for reusable grocery bags (the 99 cent ones) is 40 uses, for it to be better than the plastic bags it is replacing. I have some of those collapsible nylon bags that I've been using weekly for close to a decade!

@15 A few items? You don't need a bag for just a few items.
