I tried making myself hear Laurel, but it's yanny all the way over here. Curious to know why that is. (I'm solidly Gen-X, for what it's worth.)

2

I'm 56, last of the boomers, and I hear yanny. I absolutely can't make it out to be laurel, no matter how hard I try.

4

Laurel! I can't even imagine it being yanny. Do you think headphones vs. speakers matter? I'm a millennial

5

@3 Since never, which makes this all the more upsetting.

6

It played a different sound when i accessed it through my work VPN. And again when I switched my phone’s wifi off and opened it in a new incognito window. Seems like a trick.

7

Vox says it's a pitch-shift thing. https://www.vox.com/2018/5/15/17357684/yanny-or-laurel-audio

When I went down 30%, I got laurel clear as anything; up 30% and it's totally yanny.

Solved :)

8

I hear both - simultaneously
Yanny up high and laurel down low

9

Shitty laptop built in speakers, "yanny". Good quality headphones, "laurel".

10

Journalism is dead

11

It's def laurel! How can so many people hear yanny?

12

You an easily hear both. ‘Yanny’ is spoken in a high, nasal register, and, more quietly, a lower-register voice says ‘Laurel’ at the same time. I can hear them both. Therefore, this is no Return of the Dress.

13

@12: Maybe YOU can "easily hear both" but how do you know what each and every other person can hear?

14

I heard yanny.
It sounded like an old woman was saying it, and the voice had a very nasal quality.
I was listening through a smartphone, and I also checked with a cheap Bluetooth speaker.

15

It's clearly saying both. This is dumb.

16

Does it matter what Planet we're from?
Being from Earth (listening thru laptop speakers),
I'm hearing 'Laurel.'

Yanni (the 'musician') always puts me to sleep,
so obviously it can't be that.

Or is this another one of those "tests" (like fb sells to Cambridge Analytica), designed to weed out / get inside the heads of commies, nazis, malcontents, and neolibs?

Does this mean Dan gets another shiny brand-spankin' New CAR?! Please - more Pop Quizzes! (Does Dan already have a Driver?)

18

The first time I heard something like yalanaurel and then it was Laurel every time the rest of the way. Is it a game with sound frequencies?

19

Laurel never played the fucking Acropolis. Just saying...

20

for those who hear yanni -
are you hearing
yawn-ee
or yan-ee?
