I previewed Lou-Lou and Bath Party in this week’s Up & Coming section, but the third band on the bill (a late addition), Afrocop, deserve your close attention, too. Led by former Chicago-based keyboardist Noel Brass Jr., they (including drummer Andy Sells, bassist Carlos Tullos, and percussionist Jason Powell) play a loose, expansive strain of funk informed by jazz and post rock, recalling units like Isotope 217º and Fontanelle. Gospel, Afrobeat, and psychedelia also figure into Afrocop's open-minded approach. Check out Afrocop’s music here.
