The person writing was probably British, because the Brits spell tons "tonnes". It's not a misspelling.

Strictly speaking, "tonne" is a metric unit meaing "1000 kilograms". Since each kilogram is about 10% more than two pounds, a tonne is about 10% more than a ton. i suspect Phil is just ramping up his hyperbole that much more. It's as if he's saying "You don't just publish many times 2000 pounds wirth of pot stories. You publish 10% more than even _that_!" It's like saying "I've got a metric shit-tonne of work to get done" instead of "I've got a shit-ton of work to get done today." Except,I actually doubt that's where Phil was going with his rant. But let's give him the benefit of that doubt.
