2012 | 98 minutes | Rated PG-13

The making of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic 1960 horror film Psycho is fodder for Hitchcock, and while the film is competent, even breezily entertaining, it plays like a cable movie more than anything else. Anthony Hopkins has the requisite droop and stockiness to play Hitchcock, and he works well opposite Helen Mirren, playing wife Alma Reville, who was the filmmaker’s uncredited collaborator, script editor, and assistant director. As okay as everything is, though, it seems that in place of a proper movie, the director has just made a 98-minute wink to Hitchcock lovers. (NED LANNAMANN)
