Starship Troopers
If one scans the history of cinema, they will soon realize that a good number of the best films about America were not made by Americans. Starship Troopers is one such work. And it is the third great American film by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven. The first is, of course, RoboCop (1987); second is Total Recall. The former is about America's obsession with crime. The latter delves deeply into American political paranoia. Starship Troopers, which is set in the 23rd century, is a brazen journey into the heart of American militarism. What Verhoeven understands about the richest and most powerful nation on earth is that you can’t criticize it without enjoying or reveling in its obsessions.
