The Dune

86 min minutes

Niels Arestrup brings a rumpled gravitas to every role he plays, and The Dune is no exception. In this French-Israeli drama, cinematographer-turned-director Yossi Aviram alternates between three characters: Arestrup’s missing-persons detective, a silent Israeli chess player (Lior Ashkenazi), and a pregnant farm woman (Emma de Caunes). Aviram doles out information slowly, and the reveal isn’t completely surprising, but the emphasis on nuance plays to Arestrup’s strengths. The always-watchable Mathieu Amalric puts in a brief appearance as a missing writer who sets the plot in motion. (KATHY FENNESSY)
