With a keen eye for detail, director Andrea Pallaoro depicts an isolated family coping in different ways with boredom and loneliness in California. Ennis (Brian F. O’Byrne) struggles to keep his dairy farm going, while Christina (Catalina Sandino Moreno), who is deaf, looks after their five kids. The sun-dappled fields are lovely, but there’s no one around for miles, so a crappy TV provides entertainment when Micah isn’t shoplifting porn and Ruth isn’t sneaking out to meet a secret boyfriend. Gradually, resentment gives way to recrimination. It’s all very pretty until it isn’t. (KATHY FENNESSY)
