The Coop

Contemporary World Cinema | 2016 | 86 minutes

Stranger Says:

In the 1950s, a wife and mother of three realizes she is dying, and in a moment of desperation for her family, asks her husband to take another (barren) wife to serve as caretaker. Then she recovers and Suleyman, a traditional Turkish farmer, ends up with two wives. Set in a tiny village of stone dwellings on an arid plain, this historic fable offers quiet shots that glow with intensity, and the plot manages to thicken and twist substantially from its already dramatic starting point. (JULIA RABAN)

SIFF Says:

In a Turkish mountain village in the 1950s, Saniye develops fatal tuberculosis and suggests her husband take another wife for the good of the family. Six months later she is mysteriously cured and returns to her family's home—and her husband's new wife.
