How Most Things Work

Stranger Says:

Celina is a solemn young woman caring for her sick father while working at a tollbooth that no one comes to in rural Argentina. She wants to change her life, so she takes a job selling an encyclopedia called The Way Almost All Things Work that supposedly contains information on everything, including topics like love and survival. Celina is paired with a more experienced seller, and they set out. Main actor Verónica Gerez has a wonderful face, and women’s stories are front-and-center in the film. Some characters are easy to sympathize with and others not, which gives a genuine feeling. One of the women says about her own life: “I felt like I wasn’t the protagonist. I was an extra.” It’s a story about looking for answers. (GILLIAN ANDERSON)
