SIFF Says:Devout love and debilitating mental illness elope in this gripping romantic drama about two Romanian lovers. At the film’s onset, university lit students Toma and Ana are discussing Nietzsche while flirtatiously assessing one another. Soon, things continue in the bedroom, but then Ana suffers a shocking panic attack. Instead of hightailing for more stable pastures, Toma stays to comfort Ana and helps her find a doctor with better prescriptions. So begins a taut love affair told over conjoining timelines that bends traditional chronology. Ana takes Toma to her family home with her country bumpkin mother and stepfather, a visit that reveals past abuses Ana vehemently denies suffering. In the reverse scene with Toma’s middle-class family, he is berated by his father for financially supporting a mentally unstable person, but the tumultuous family relations only strengthen the couple’s resolve. Ana slowly overcomes her ailments and they become pregnant, but as she gains a career and personal independence, Toma’s world begins shuttering as his insecurities fester under the light of Ana’s success. Neither can seem to live without the other, even if they may lead each other to ruin.
