The Gospel According to André

SIFF Says:

Inspired by the effortless glamour of his late grandmother and the grandeur of traditional church wear, a boy growing up in the segregated Jim Crow South became one of the first black voices in fashion and an icon of taste making. Featuring rare archival footage as well as narratives from industry legends like Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs, and Valentino, Kate Novack’s THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ANDRÉ pays tribute to a man whose influence spans decades and continents. Well known for his fabulously imaginative one-liners, this intimate documentary feature dives much deeper into the reflective, sentimental and elegant soul that is André Leon Talley. As a black man standing over six feet tall, he stood out like a sore thumb at runway shows. Yet, through a career marked by his signature lovable exuberance and talent that earned him a position as editor-at-large at VOGUE, he shamelessly left his mark on fashion history and paved the way for countless others to do the same. Influenced by Talley’s own words, “I don’t live for fashion, I love for beauty and style,” Novack’s film is much less a showcase of decades of legendary runway moments than a humanizing look into the behind-the-scenes of couture and the trailblazer that inspired so much of it.
