Legend of the Demon Cat
The great Chinese director Chen Kaige’s first masterpiece is Farewell My Concubine, which in the 1990s helped launch a new league of Chinese directors. His second is The Emperor and the Assassin. After these art-house successes, he directed an American thriller, Killing Me Softly, and a bunch of films for mainstream Chinese audiences, the latest of which is Legend of the Demon Cat. It’s set in the Tang Dynasty and concerns a very, very evil pussy. No matter what the subject, Chen’s visuals always stand out.
