Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

2008 | 118 min. minutes

Narrated by Johnny Depp, this extensive documentary mixes archival footage (including an entertaining stint by the young author on To Tell the Truth) with an army of talking heads to flesh out the life and work of Thompson. While it’s certainly a fawning account, it’s not without warts; Thompson is recalled as both loving and prickly, talented and too wonked-out to perform. The doc moves at a good clip, though director Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side) risks spoiling the mood at times with unnecessary flair and obvious music cues.
