Savage Grace

2007 | 96 min. minutes

Based on the real-life murder of socialite Barbara Daly Baekeland, this blast of luridness is equal parts irritating and unnerving. Julianne Moore is a monster in the role of Barbara, whose thoroughly fucked-up life came to a gruesome end when her own son Tony (Eddie Redmayne)—who she had been sleeping with in order to “cure” him of homosexuality—took a kitchen knife to her in 1972. Tom Kalin’s film is little more than a series of vignettes patched together into a stylized, emotionally elusive sleazefest; what saves it from being unwatchable are the strong performances from everyone involved. The story may have been the sensation of the tabloids, but the movie is a punishing mess.
